The Under 17 Car Club is one of the most unique youth driving options in the UK — not a one‑off lesson, but a year‑round community for young motoring enthusiasts. Members meet regularly at major venues such as Stafford, Castle Combe, and Malvern, progressing through a structured programme that develops everything from basic control to genuinely advanced car handling.
Roadster! has spent a full day with the club, observing sessions, talking to instructors and watching members tackle everything from precision manoeuvres to high‑speed braking exercises. The atmosphere is warm, disciplined and deeply community‑driven — more like a family than a driving school.
Members typically bring their own cars, though the club also provides a selection of learner‑friendly hatchbacks. Across the season, young drivers learn skills rarely taught before age 17: skid control, emergency handling, reversing challenges, observation drills, high‑speed braking, and even occasional opportunities to try larger vehicles.
Price: Membership is around £385 per year, plus a joining fee — excellent value for families who can commit to attending multiple events, but a bigger investment than a standard driving experience.
The only real drawback is the commitment required: this is a club designed for regular participation, not a quick birthday treat.
Roadster! Verdict
For young drivers who want to become genuinely skilled, confident and road‑aware, this is the most comprehensive programme in the UK. The community feel, advanced coaching and huge variety of vehicles make it a standout — best suited to long‑term enthusiasts rather than casual visitors.
Roadster! Note
Roadster! has not been members of the Under 17 Car Club, but we have spent a day with them on‑site, observing activities and speaking with instructors. Our impressions reflect that first‑hand visit, supported by publicly available information for pricing and membership details.
