A fan-built LEGO version of the wild Renault 5 Turbo 3E has just BLASTED through the LEGO Ideas approval threshold, hitting 10,000 supporters in only 44 days. The 1:12 scale model was created by British engineer Dave Collins (@devonbricks), who spent around 100 hours designing and perfecting it.
The whole adventure began with a single email Collins sent to Renault. The company loved it instantly and launched a Europe‑wide push to help it gain support. Within days, Collins was invited to London for photo shoots, and his LEGO car was showcased on Oxford Street, where it grabbed huge attention from fans and tourists alike!
The real Turbo 3E is an all‑electric, drift‑focused tribute to the legendary 1980s R5 Turbo. Limited to 1,980 cars, it produces 555 hp, uses in‑wheel motors for huge torque, and features a super‑wide stance and retro‑futuristic LEDs that make it look like a video‑game car brought to life!
Now that the LEGO model has hit the magic number, it moves to LEGO’s September review. If approved, it will become an official set sold worldwide… and Collins will earn a 1% commission on every one sold!
That’s the inspiring part: LEGO Ideas is open to anyone. If you’ve got imagination, patience and a brilliant idea, you could design something, share it with the world, and watch it take off just like this!
